Review mobile and desktop search differences before blaming the layout

Compare device segments with consistent scope, examine query mix and connect search observations to targeted page tests without assuming causation.

Separate a search difference from a page defect

A lower mobile click-through rate is an observation about search activity, not a diagnosis of a broken mobile page. Start by recording the affected metric, dates and pages. Write the question narrowly: does the difference persist for the same important queries and destinations, or only in the sitewide average?

Keep a separate page-test record for layout, navigation and form behavior. Search evidence can tell you where to investigate, while a reproducible page failure can justify a repair. Combining the two too early encourages expensive redesigns that do not address the observed problem.

Create a consistent device comparison

Google's Performance report supports comparisons between device groups and allows filters across dimensions. Select the intended property and date range, then compare mobile and desktop while preserving the same country, page and query scope. Save the active settings with the export so the comparison can be repeated.

Retain clicks, impressions, CTR and average position rather than exporting only the percentage that looks weakest. Check whether both groups have enough observed activity for the decision you want to make. When a value is unavailable, preserve that label; do not manufacture a zero to complete the table.

Inspect the mix behind the device totals

List the important queries and landing pages in each device segment. A mobile group dominated by broad research questions and a desktop group dominated by brand searches are not equivalent audiences. Review a smaller shared set to see whether the difference remains after narrowing the scope.

Also inspect whether the lower rate accompanies a different observed position or a shift toward other pages. These are candidate explanations, not proof of a single cause. Keep the original broad view and the narrower comparison together so the report does not conceal the selection that produced its conclusion.

Example: fewer clicks do not identify the faulty component

Illustrative figures: mobile records 20 clicks from 1,000 impressions, while desktop records 20 from 400. Their CTRs are 2% and 5%. This calculation establishes a rate difference; it does not show that a navigation menu caused it. The reviewer next compares the shared service queries and their landing pages.

Separately, a page test finds that a contact overlay covers the submit button on a small screen. That reproducible failure deserves a fix on its own evidence. After repairing it, the team checks the form again and observes later search and conversion data separately. The invented example does not claim that the repair will eliminate the CTR gap.

Choose a focused next action

If a specific mobile defect is reproducible, assign it to the developer with the page, screen conditions, steps and expected behavior. If the difference mainly reflects query mix, review whether the destinations meet those different needs. If evidence is sparse, collect another comparable interval instead of declaring a device-wide SEO failure.

A useful handover includes the device comparison, the query subset reviewed, any independent page-test evidence and the limits of the conclusion. Verify a fix under the original failing conditions. Report improved functionality as such, and reserve claims about search effects for measured follow-up evidence.
